Early signs of dyslexia in EYFS and KS1: What to look out for

Updated: 3 days ago

Many people associate dyslexia with older children struggling to read or spell. However, early indicators can appear much earlier often in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) or Key Stage 1 (KS1).

At this stage, we’re not diagnosing, we’re observing and supporting. Identifying potential signs early helps children get the right strategies before confidence dips.

Here are some early signs to look out for:

1. Language and Listening

  • Difficulty learning or remembering nursery rhymes

  • Confusing words that sound similar (e.g. puddle/puzzle)

  • Struggling to follow multi-step instructions

2. Phonological Awareness

  • Finds it hard to recognise the first sound in a word

  • Struggles to clap out syllables

  • Difficulty connecting sounds to letters

3. Reading and Writing

  • Avoids mark-making or writing

  • Struggles to remember letter shapes and names

  • Finds blending sounds into words challenging

4. Memory and Sequencing

  • Trouble remembering routines or sequences (like days of the week)

  • Forgets instructions quickly

  • Difficulty retaining the alphabet

5. Emotional and Behavioural Clues

  • Avoids reading or writing tasks

  • Appears frustrated, even when trying hard

  • May say things like “I can’t do this” or “I’m not good at reading”

Reassurance for Parents

These signs do not confirm dyslexia but they may be early indicators that a child could benefit from additional support. Every child is different, and early understanding can make all the difference.
